Rent your AZUR canoe from the campsite and go on the Dordogne to discover the region
Along the water, you will be surprised by the villages that stand on the banks of the Dordogne.
The Dordogne is known to be one of the most beautiful rivers in France. It is also one of the few to have preserved a remarkable wild aspect. It is the only French river whose entire course has been classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. While traversing its meanders, you will discover a very rich fauna and flora. Birds such as herons are plentiful and fish populations thrive.
In crystal-clear summer water, it’s not uncommon to spot a shoal of perch, a pike or a few carp oxygenating on the surface. The luckiest of you will be able to see a salmon trying to swim upstream in a rapid. Migratory species are indeed very well represented in these waters, which attests to their quality and purity.
Only the encounter with the Coulobre, a giant snake whose legends say that it once sank the gabariers, could spoil your adventure. But apparently it hasn’t been seen for several centuries…

Canoeing for sailing on the Dordogne river
In terms of architecture, the setting is just as spectacular. History buffs and tourists in search of discovery just have to let themselves be carried along by the current, discovering, meander after meander, the castles that stand along the route. La Roque-Gageac, Domme or Castelnaud are perfect examples of the typical villages you will encounter.
Labeled “Most beautiful villages of France”, they will surprise you with their singular architecture on the cliffside. You will see the castles and strongholds that line every winding bend in the river. The oldest ones, like the one in Castelnaud, founded in the 12th century, will transport young and old into a thousand-year-old history, made of knights and battles.
Sailing your AZUR canoe on the Dordogne river, you’ll be amazed by the sheer number of castles. This number is not so surprising when you know that the Périgord is nicknamed the region of 1001 castles.
